CHUMS has been in existence since 1991. The group has providing support, self-advocacy and the opportunities for initiatives for users of the mental health services in Colchester and the surrounding area.
The organisation came into being due to the efforts of the then MIND forum advocate “Mo” French who arrange a public meeting at Colchester’s central clinic in 1991. The guest speaker was Peter Campbell, founder of the pioneering service users organisation, “Survivors Speak Out,” who gave an inspirational talk about his experiences and his organisation.
Going on from this initial meeting local service users continued to meet monthly, electing its first group of officers and chairman, the late Allan Carter. The name CHUMS was thought up by Catherine Hayes, who was chairperson before eventually finding full time employment.
Over the years members of CHUMS have gone on to other endeavours in the service users field, including the training group SUD (Service Users Development), UKAM (United Kingdom Advocacy Network) and NEST (North Essex Stronger Together).
In May 2005 CHUMS registered as a non-profit making company limited by guarantee so as to continue its supportive involvement in the community for mental health users.
